Afrobeat

I did a session last week at Damon Albarn’s studio in West London. The project was based around Tony Allen, most known as the inventor of Afrobeat drumming and longtime collaborator of Fela Kuti. He’s also involved in a lot of Damon’s non-Blur projects.

Electrical Audio – Chicago

On Jan 2nd we flew out to Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio studio in Chicago. We touched down in temperatures of around -25. Pretty painful! We had 5 days of recording, 11 tracks, straight to tape, with Albini at the controls. As you’d expect, it’s a beautiful studio with amazing gear. This was the second record we’d done with Steve but the first at Electrical. He’s recently been recording the new Foo Fighters record. A pretty great start to the year!

Stuck In Love

A track I played on called ‘No Time To Speak’ is featured on the soundtrack to this new movie starring Greg Kinnear, Jennifer Connelly and Kristen Bell. Elliott Smith and Bon Iver are also on there so it’s in good company! Out in cinemas this week……

ENEMY

The super-cool Art & Graft made this awesome video for one of our singles…..they got my kit right and everything.

The Pool

I’ve spent a fair bit of time at The Pool in Bermondsey. It’s run by Ben Hillier who produced Blur’s ‘Think Tank’ record…..and Depeche Mode’s new one apparently. It used to be a swimming pool so it’s got a nice big live room, which is great for tracking drums.

London Town

I recently played a show at KOKO in North London, it’s one of the coolest venues in town in my opinion. I’ve seen some great bands there….Tortoise, Sebadoh, Girls Against Boys….and Swans next month! Here’s some pics:

Ginger Baker

Who could be a better drum teacher than Ginger Baker? Kids: don’t do drugs.

My Studio

I do all of my drum lessons from a studio space on Brighton/Hove seafront. It’s a fantastic art deco building opposite Hove lawns. There’s always fun things happening and it has a great history. You can read more about it here.

10 years ago to the day

Slightly embarrassing but what the heck….We were actually ejected from the building for having an altercation with Atomic Kitten’s entourage. It made it in to the NME and everything.

Red Bull for the BBC

I did a radio session recently at the Red Bull Music Academy for the BBC’s show ‘The Selector’. In conjunction with the Arts Council they do some really great work. www.redbullmusicacademy.com is worth checking out as they have some really interesting lectures with everyone from Erykah Badu to Trevor Horn to Steve Reich. Here’s some pics:

I brought my main kit which is a 1960’s Gretch Round Badge, but the studio had a cool old Premier kit so i used that instead. Sounded pretty good!

A week with Steve Albini

I thought I’d post some photo’s of recording with Steve Albini. Basically, if you took a bunch of my favourite records, they’ve all been done by Steve. Nirvana’s ‘In Utero’, PJ Harvey ‘Rid Of Me’, the Pixies, the Jesus Lizard, Neurosis, Fugazi. The list is endless.

We spent just over a week at a studio called Black Box near Angers in France. He’ll only use one other studio in Europe, and that’s Abbey Road which is like, £1500 a day. He records straight to tape and get’s the best drum sound I’ve ever heard in about an hour. Steve Albini, we salute you.
